Q: How do I pass referrer information to specific Web pages in Norton Internet

Security (NIS) and Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) 2003 or 2004?

A: Some Web pages require referrer information before allowing you to view their

page. If you want to allow referrer information to pass to a particular Web page, you

must create a rule for it.

To create a Rule:

1. Open NIS or NPF.

Do one of the following.

§ In NIS/NPF 2003, click Options, Internet Security or Personal Firewall (This

step is not always needed), and then click the Web Content tab.

§ In NIS/NPF 2004, double-click Privacy Control, and then click Advanced.

2. Click Add Site. A new site/domain box appears.

3. Enter the name of the site that you want to receive the referrer information and

click OK. In this example, it will be www.learndirect.co.uk The site name

appears in the left frame of the Options window.

4. Click the name of the new site.

5. Click the Global Settings tab.

§ In the "Information about visited sites" section, clear "Use default settings."

6. Click Permit.

7. Click OK to close the Options window.

Technical Information

How referrer information works:

When you click a Web page, your browser notes the current page that you are on and

sends that information to the server of the new Web page. This way, the server for the

new Web page knows the last Web page that you viewed.

For example, if you are on www.learndirect.co.uk and click www.microsoft.com,

the browser sends www.microsoft.com the information that you are currently viewing

www.learndirect.co.uk If you block referrer information, the server of the page you

are requesting to see does not know what page you saw last. By default, Norton Internet

Security (NIS) and Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) block this information. Some Web

sites require this information before they allow you to see their pages.

Allowing access to specific Web sites and newsgroups blocked through Parental Control or Productivity Control

Situation:
Since installing Norton Internet Security, you cannot access some Web sites or newsgroups. Instead, you see a message that says "Norton Internet Security has blocked access to this restricted site." You want to know how to access the Web sites or newsgroups.

Solution:

Before you begin: For the purposes of this document, the term Parental Control refers to both Parental Control in Norton Internet Security and Productivity Control in Norton Internet Security Professional.

Parental Control categorises Web sites by topic, newsgroups by text string, and Internet programs by type. When you enable Parental Control, it blocks any incoming information from restricted Web sites and newsgroups. It also blocks all outgoing information from restricted Internet programs. Parental Control settings are linked to user accounts that are defined during installation. Norton Internet Security uses the settings associated with the accounts until the user logs off. Only the Supervisor or the Standard user can disable a blocked site, program, or newsgroups, although Standard users can only disable blocking in their personal account.

Symantec updates the list of blocked Web sites regularly. Run LiveUpdate often to ensure that you have the current list.

To completely disable Parental Control blocking
A Supervisor can completely disable Parental Control blocking in any or all accounts, which will remove blocking for any sites or newsgroups.

1.   Open Norton Internet Security.

2.   In the Norton Internet Security interface, double-click Parental Control.

3.   In the Parent Control dialog box, uncheck Turn on Parental Control.

4.   Click OK.

This disables all blocking for the accounts.

To create exceptions for specific sites (disable blocking)
A Supervisor user can also disable Parental Control blocking for specific sites, programs, or newsgroups.

1.   Open Norton Internet Security.

2.   In the Norton Internet Security interface, double-click Parental Control.

3.   In the Parental Control dialog box, click the Parental Control settings for drop-down list and select the account that you want to change.

4.   Click Sites.
"Specify blocked sites" should already be selected and a list of Web site categories with some or all categories checked.

5.   If you want to unblock all sites for a specific category, uncheck the box for that category.

6.   If you want to unblock only a site in a category, click Exceptions.

7.   In the Exceptions dialog box, click Add.

8.   In the Add Web site to the Exception List dialog box, type the URL of the Web site that want to add.

9.   Click OK.

10.  Repeat the previous three steps for each Web site that you want to added to your exceptions list.

11.  When you are done adding sites, click OK.

To prevent the use of categories of Internet programs
A Supervisor can also prevent the use of Internet programs.

1.   In the Norton Internet Security interface, double-click Parental Control.

2.   In the Parental Control dialog box, select the account that you want to change on the Settings For menu.

3.   Click Programs.

4.   In the Programs dialog box, uncheck the categories of programs that this account is not usually allowed to use under Program Categories.

5.   Click OK.

To create exceptions to blocked newsgroups
A Supervisor can also create exceptions to blocked newsgroups.

1.   In the Norton Internet Security interface, double-click Parental Control.

2.   In the Parental Control window, select the account that you want to change on the Settings For menu.

3.   Click Newsgroups.

4.   In the Specify Newsgroups window, click Specify Blocked Newsgroups.

5.   Click Exceptions.

6.   Click Add.

7.   In the Add Newsgroup to Exceptions List window, type the complete name of the newsgroup that you want to unblock.

8.   Click OK.

9.   When you are done adding exceptions, click OK.

To modify users' Web and application access rights
The information in this section may or may not be important for your situation. Use your best judgement whenever changing the default Parental Control settings, and only follow the instructions in the sections which describe a process you want to perform. For example, if you want to allow a particular Web site, you should skip directly the section titled "To create a Permit site list." To set up Web site access
Web site controls can be based on "what is allowed" or "what is not allowed." The default setting is for "what is not allowed." With this, you specify blocked sites. Read the section below for the method that you will use.

To create a Blocked site list
When using the "What is not allowed," you choose blocked sites mainly by groups. These groups are listed in the "Web Site Categories to Block" box. Those that are checked are blocked.

To create a Permit site list
By listing "what is allowed," you choose exactly which Web sites the user can see.

Technical Information:
Overview of the Norton Internet Security user accounts setup program screen

  2. To create just one Norton Internet Security user account, click Create Account (2a).

Troubleshoot your firewall

Norton Personal Firewall or Norton Internet Securitye

If you're having trouble viewing some parts of a web page or whole pages seem to be blank, your firewall is usually causing the problem by blocking cookies or scripts that the website can't work without.

Blank page problem

If the web page you're trying to view is completely blank, try changing your firewall's cookie-blocking settings.

  • in the Privacy Control tab, choose Custom Level
  • set Cookie Blocking to Medium or None.

If that fixes the problem, but you'd prefer to block cookies in general, you can make an exception for the problem website by customising the settings for that individual site.

Part pages blank, or with an error

If only part of a web page is blank or contains an error message, you'll need to experiment with a number of different settings to determine where the problem lies.

If the problem seems to relate to dynamic or interactive content (pages that change in response to your actions), adjust script-blocking settings in NPF or NIS:

  • in the Security Centre, select Personal Firewall
  • select Custom Level.
  • choose a lower level for Personal Firewall, Java or ActiveX.

Try altering the three settings one at a time, until the website works correctly.

You can return to default settings at any time:

  • in the Security Centre, select Personal Firewall
  • choose Default Level.

If the solution above doesn't work, try adjusting VBScript blocking:

  • in Options, select Advanced Options and click on the Web tab
  • under Active Content select the website you want to change, and then choose Defaults
  • in the Script box, select Allow All Scripts To Execute.

If none of the above work, you'll need to adjust the settings for each affected site individually.

Secure sites

If you only have problems viewing secure websites, such as online banks, shopping sites or sites with addresses that start with https://, you'll need to make sure that secure sites are enabled in your privacy settings in NPF or NIS:

  • Click Privacy Control and select Custom Level
  • in the Customise Privacy Settings, tick Enable Secure Connections (https).

Page rebound

In the attempt to hide your computer's presence from hackers, firewalls often block common internet applications such as web-based games, instant messengers, video-conferencing software or chat programs, unless you specifically give them permission to access the web.

Similarly, some programs, such as instant messengers, need additional privileges to act as a server — rather than passively sending and receiving information, they need to actively listen for other computers running the same software. To enable a program to access the internet, including acting as a server, you'll need to add the application to the approved list:

  • Click on Personal Firewall and select Internet Access Control then click Add.
  • Select the application's executable file (for ICQ, that's ICQ.exe, for example) and then click Open
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.

If the application is already listed as having access, but isn't working:

  • Click on Personal Firewall and select Internet Access Control.
  • Select the application and choose Permit All.

Games-related problems can also be caused by script blocking, see above.

Rules and referrals

When you move between web pages on some sites (including www.learndirect.co.uk), the website checks where you came from to make sure that you're allowed to view the page.

Some personal firewalls block this sort of information transfer because it can be used to track your movement between unrelated websites, as well as within a single website.

Fortunately, you can usually change the settings for a specific trustworthy site, while retaining your privacy on the rest of the internet. Here's how:

  • Open Norton Personal Firewall
  • select Options then Advanced Options.
  • Click Add Site and type in the name of the website in the box provided
  • Click OK.
  • Select the website you just added and tick Use these options for (website)
  • Select Permit under Referrer then click OK.

TIP

Some firewalls need you to restart Windows in order for any changes to options and settings to take effect.

Firewall site permissions

In NPF or NIS, you can assign permission on a site-by-site basis.
